Many years ago, in one of the biggest markets in a certain city in Nigeria a child of about 15 years was roaming around the market for hours with goods he has bought in the market and was found by some good Samaritans. The child had lost his way around the market in the crowd of people. After several attempts to find his way out of the market proved abortive, the child was seen crying with goods on his head. To make matters worse, it was discovered by sympathizers that the child could not communicate in the English Language. Some Christians like this child have lost their way around this world and need help.
In 536 BC, Zerubbabel led about 50,000 Jewish returnees back to Jerusalem. A verification exercise had to be carried out to ascertain the genealogies of all returnees. Nehemiah repeated the same exercise many years later.
We are told that there were some whose genealogies were not listed; their names could not be traced to any of the families and tribes of lsrael. Prominent among them were certain Priests whose names or father’s names could not be traced. They were therefore regarded as unholy and excluded from the Priesthood.
The reason they were a lost people is that their father, a Priest, corrupted the lineage and lost the family identity. He got married to a daughter of Barzillai, a very rich and prominent man in the time of David, and decided to name his sons after Barzillai for the sake of temporary convenience, at the cost of his family name. The names of ordinary people and even servants and their sons were found in the record, but the names of certain Priests of God were missing.
One day the books will be opened, will your name be there? On that day, it will not be by facial identification, but by the books. These ‘lost’ Jews were not denied their opportunity to travel along with other Jews; no one doubted they were Jews until the books were brought out. They may have been engaged in some Priestly duties prior to this time. Don’t be in the church, serving in different capacities yet, without a name in the register of life.
