Attitude makes the difference, even in God’s kingdom. A wrong attitude towards God’s word denies people the immense benefits of the Word. In Matthew 13:58, the Bible says that Jesus did not do many mighty works in His own country, Nazareth, because of the people’s unbelief.
Unbelief is a negative attitude. It limits the flow of the anointing and denies people divine blessings. Hebrews 4:2 makes allusion to two categories of people to whom the gospel was preached. It says that the word profited those who had the right attitude towards it; conversely, it did not profit the others because they did not mix it with faith—a negative attitude.

The Berean Christians received the word of God with all readiness of mind (Acts 17:11). Like them, we must receive God’s word with readiness of mind and a sincere desire to be taught aright. The Berean believers’ attitude towards the word earned them the Scriptures’ commendation as being more noble-minded than the Jews in Thessalonica.
Similarly, in our Bible text for today, Apostle Paul commended the Thessalonian brethren, who, though in affliction, received the word of God with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Paul added that by so doing, the believers in Thessalonica, his spiritual children, made him and other Apostles good examples to all believers. Can your pastor say the same thing about you? Does the way you approach and handle God’s Word portray you as a mature, heaven-bound Christian that your church and spiritual mentors can be proud of?
The Bible guides us on what our attitude towards God’s word should be. It says we should continue steadfastly in it (Acts 2:42). We are to steadfastly read it, meditate on it, and follow it (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2). The Bible also enjoins us to accept the word of God as authoritative, accept that it provides everything that is needed for the life of a Christian (2 Peter 1:3-4) and acknowledge that only God’s word can build us up and make us grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:32; 2 Peter 3:18). What is your attitude towards God’s Word? Examine yourself and see if you are in faith!
