Acts 4:23-31
23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Questions for Reflection:
- Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
- What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide for Today 7th August 2024 Outline
After being set free by the Sanhedrin, Peter and John went back to where the believers were meeting and reported what had transpired (verse 23).
How would we react after such threats? Instead of complaining or being fearful, notice the immediate response of the believers (verse 24a) and the content of their response (verses 24b-30), especially their request in verses 29-30.
Observe also how God responded to such a prayer that focused on Him and His glory (verse 31). Let us be encouraged and assured that the Lord will also answer our prayers that are focused on His glory and mission.
May the Lord help us to turn first to Him when we get into any kind of trouble. God hears us when we pray and answers us according to His will for us. He does what He knows is right and best for each situation.
Can you draw a lesson from the Apostles’ experience here? And how does their experience here compare with that in Acts 2:3-4 at Pentecost? Notice any similarities or differences.
Practice/Word Application
What next? How supportive are we, especially in prayer, of believers suffering for their faith around the world?
- Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Make verses 29-30 your prayer for yourself and the many persecuted Christians who are seeking to make Christ known.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Numbers 6:24-26:
24 The LORD bless you and keep you:
25 The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you:
26 The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
