TOPIC: GOD DELIVERS BY ANY AND ALL MEANS
Before you continue Study Yesterday’s Devotional: Scripture Union Daily Guide 10th August 2024: We Must Obey God Rather Than Man
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 5:33-42
33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.
37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
Question(s) for Reflection
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 August 2024 Outline
Peter and the other apostles had made it clear to the council that they would rather obey God than man and this should be the duty of every true believer. Following Christ will often bring Christians to face the wrath of civil, religious and or traditional authorities. We must be prepared to face such situations gallantly as the apostles did.
Notice, however, how God made a way and delivered them from death using Gamaliel’s logical argument. “The Lord knows how to deliver the godly…” (2 Peter 2:9). He can use anything or anyone to deliver His people, be it denying the king his sleep, shutting the mouth of lions, turning fire into an air conditioner, or creating a highway in the sea. If you find yourself in such life-threatening situation, don’t fret but believe God for His deliverance.
The Apostles were beaten for preaching, discharged, and sternly warned not to preach any more. What can you learn from their reaction (vs.41-42)? This takes us back to their resolve in v.29. Are you ready to obey the Lord even when this means risking your life?
Practice/Word Application
And so? There is honour in being dishonoured for the sake of Christ, therefore rejoice in such situations

WE HAVE A MESSAGE
1 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
And time now is speeding, the moments are few;
The Master is come, O make haste to receive Him,
For sinners He waits; He is calling for you!
Refrain
For you He is calling, for you He is calling,
Yes, Jesus is calling, is calling for you.
2 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
A message of hope to the weary of heart;
The love of my Savior, there’s nothing so precious,
The friendship of Jesus will never depart.
3 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
A message of love to the poor drunkard’s soul;
The love of my Jesus will snap all his fetters,
The blood of my Savior makes perfectly whole.
4 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
O do not reject Him and forfeit your soul!
The Savior invites you just now to receive Him,
And in His great love to be made fully whole.
