SCRIPTURE for Today: JOSHUA 5:1-12
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

Scripture Union Daily Guide for Today 16 August 2024 Outline
The nations heard of God’s wonders for His people and became paralysed with fear. It is the enemy that should fear us and not the other way around.
Joshua, acting on the Lord’s instructions, circumcised this second generation of Israelites. Why (vs.4-7)? What should this teach us to do about upcoming generations?
“Today I have rolled away your shame of slavery…” (v.9). Circumcision in the New Testament signifies the cutting-off of the sinful nature (Colossians 2:11); and sin goes with shame.
When we surrender to Jesus, sin and shame are taken away from us (old nature) and all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
In v.10, another memorial was celebrated to recount another mighty deliverance by God. For the New Testament believers this could be likened to our spiritual birthday when God took us out of slavery to sin (Egypt) and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son, Jesus.
This calls for continuous recounting and giving praise to God. Something remarkable happened in vs.11-12 to show that God had been their provider those forty years. He will also always provide for you. Trust Him and thank Him in advance.

Daily Guide Devotional For Today 16th August 2024 (Thursday) Anthem
WE HAVE A MESSAGE
1 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
And time now is speeding, the moments are few;
The Master is come, O make haste to receive Him,
For sinners He waits; He is calling for you!
Refrain
For you He is calling, for you He is calling,
Yes, Jesus is calling, is calling for you.
2 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
A message of hope to the weary of heart;
The love of my Savior, there’s nothing so precious,
The friendship of Jesus will never depart.
3 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
A message of love to the poor drunkard’s soul;
The love of my Jesus will snap all his fetters,
The blood of my Savior makes perfectly whole.
4 We have a message, a message from Jesus,
O do not reject Him and forfeit your soul!
The Savior invites you just now to receive Him,
And in His great love to be made fully whole.
Closing Prayer
Take time to recount your salvation experience and how God planned and worked it out. Then thank Him for it.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 138:3
“And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.”
