Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 August 2024 Bible Text: Acts 5:12-21A
12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
13 And of the rest, durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.
15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,
20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught.
Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 August 2024 Message
Dealing with the sin of Ananias and Sapphira in the early church had such a great effect on the community that people were afraid to join them.
Many more believed and there was an explosion of miracles to the extent that Peter’s shadow had healing power and brought about miracles (verses 13-16). God is indeed a God of miracles and if we come to Him in faith, we also can live a life of miracles.
As the church grew (verse 14), notice how opposition increased from Jewish leaders (verses 17-18). The proclamation of Jesus is inevitably linked to persecution in some form. The growing number of persecuted Christians around the world testifies to this.
Despite hardships and trials, the children of God are assured of the Lord’s presence and his care (verse 19). How does this encourage us to share the gospel boldly?
Notice that the apostles were freed from prison for a purpose (verse 20). They faithfully obeyed God’s instructions as soon as the day dawned (verse 21a). What a remarkable boldness! How do we compare our zeal for God to these devoted servants of God?
Practice/Word Application:
Thought: Do you know that the same power given to the Apostles is still available to us today? Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
- Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer:
Pray for revival again in our churches and fellowships today.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Daniel 6:27
“He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.”
