TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL
Paul makes a strange admission in Romans 8. He says we do not know what we should pray for as we ought. Not that we do not know how to talk, or that we lack words. We simply do not always know what the situation in front of us actually requires. A student can spend an hour praying hard about the wrong thing. A young person can fast over a door God never intended to open. Sincerity is not the same as accuracy, and heaven answers according to what is right, not according to how loudly we asked.
That is why the Holy Spirit was given. Paul says He helps our infirmities, and the specific weakness he names is prayer. The Spirit makes intercession for us, and verse 27 tells us why that intercession never misses: He prays according to the will of God. He is not guessing. He has access to a mind we cannot reach on our own, and He carries what He finds there into our prayers.
Here is the part most of us struggle with. The mind of God is not a bigger version of your own mind. It is different. When you finally receive it, it will often look small, slow, or even foolish from where you are standing. A woman argues with an angry husband for twenty-five years and gets nowhere; the answer turns out to be kneeling quietly and saying nothing. Naaman was told to dip in a muddy river. The wisdom of God comes wrapped in instructions that offend our reasoning, which is exactly why our reasoning never produced them.
Discernment, then, is not a mood. It is not the goosebumps you felt during worship. Discernment grows out of consciousness. When the Spirit of God came to live in your heart, He brought an awareness of a realm you did not know existed. What you do with that awareness decides how far you go in it. Feed it with the Word, with quiet time, with obedience in the small matters, and it sharpens. Ignore it, and it goes faint until you can no longer tell His voice from your own preferences.
Consider Moses. He was not a geologist, yet water came out of rock. He owned no ranch, yet meat came for millions. In the day of battle, the strategy was simply that his hands stay raised. Everything that sustained a whole nation flowed through one man’s ability to reach into the mind of God. If you tried to count him in a census, one would be the wrong number. That is what a single life becomes when it learns to listen.
To the student reading this: you are making decisions right now that will shape the next twenty years. Which course to change to. Which relationship to walk away from. Whether to take the offer or wait. Your friends will have opinions, your parents will have opinions, and social media will have plenty. None of them can see the end from the beginning. Do not make permanent decisions from temporary feelings. Take the matter into your closet before you take it into the group chat, and give the Holy Spirit room to say something you were not expecting.
KEY POINT: You cannot pray accurately about a situation until you have first received God’s mind concerning it.

DAILY PRAYER
Father, I admit that I do not always know what to pray for as I ought. Teach me to wait long enough to hear You instead of rushing ahead with my own conclusions. Holy Spirit, sharpen my consciousness of Your realm, help me to recognise Your voice above my feelings and above the noise around me, and give me the humility to obey You even when Your instruction does not make sense to my understanding. Order my steps in the decisions ahead of me this month, and let my life count for Your purpose, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
